RG 100. APACHE COUNTY
Apache County was created February 14, 1879, from part of
Mohave County. Named after the Apache Indians, it was the seventh Arizona
county, and St. Johns was named the county seat. The county originally included
the areas that later became Navajo County and portions of Gila and Graham
counties.
SG 1. Assessor.
Military enrollments. 1917. (1 roll of microfilm.)
Military enrollments are arranged by martial status, then
alphabetically by last name.
Duplicate assessment roll. 1905. (1 volume)
This is a duplicate copy of the assessment roll on which
corrections and changes to the original were made.
SG 4. Justice of the Peace.
Coroners inquests. 1882-1947. (1 roll of microfilm)
The early records are handwritten, but later inquests are
typed except for the signatures. Files include oaths directed to Coroners
juries and their instructions. Inquests are arranged chronologically.
Justice of the peace cases. 1882-1919. (1 box and 2
volumes)
The cases are filed by year and divided into precincts.
SG 5. Recorder.
Great Registers. 1884-1910. (1 box and 2 volumes)
This group includes great registers, jury lists and
affidavits. The great register for 1886 is missing. Jury lists were made up from
voter registrations, 1895-1906. The affidavits are for registration of
naturalized citizens in the great registers. Affidavits note all great register
information, 1896, for Springerville, and for Lake Erin and Woodruff, 1884-1886.
Appointments, bonds and oaths. 1879-1898. (1 box)
Files contain papers from county offices and officers:
Recorder, Assessor, Constable and Judges.
Livestock marks and brands. 1879-1897. (3 volumes)
The volumes are indexed by owners name. Some pages have
cancellations.
Townsite papers. 1887-1934. (1 roll of microfilm)
Include information on Concho, Nutrioso, St. Johns,
Springerville and Luna Amusement Park. Records include petitions of Church
authorities/trustees to hold title to real estate belonging to individuals of
the Eager Ward, Concho Ward, Alpine Ward, Nutrioso Ward and Greer Wards of the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1899.
SG 6. Sheriff.
License tax and feebook. 1887-1891. ( 1 roll of
microfilm)
Records document license taxes collected per quarter,
Sheriffs fees for civil cases and Sheriffs fees due the County Treasurer.
The book also contains 1889 taxes collected on tax deeds; cash assessments,
1889, of candidates for office; named accounts; and fees, 1887-1888, for serving
papers and travel expenses.
SG 7. Superintendent of Schools.
Teachers registers. 1882-1955. (4 rolls of microfilm)
Files contain teachers registers of student attendance.
School census. 1926. (1 roll of microfilm)
This is a census of school children between the ages of five
and twenty-one.
School reports. 1881-1950. (3 volumes)
School reports are public school teachers quarterly
reports. The records are incomplete and not all districts are listed for all
years. Another type of report is the report of the clerk of the board of
trustees. There are also teachers reports to the trustees which teachers
filed monthly in order to receive their salary.
SG 8. Superior Court.
Clerk of the Court. 1881-1931. (11 rolls of microfilm)
The records include an index to District Court papers,
1881-1931; calendar, 1883-1893; jury book, 1885-1910; minutes, 1893-1911;
judgment book, 1886-1920; subpoenas, 1895-1901; court orders, 1899-1900; and
register of actions, 1882-1911. court orders, 1897-1900, are to open and adjourn
court, postpone court, payment for court reporters and court fees. Register of
actions, 1882-1911, includes an index of criminal cases.
Civil Division. 1879-1931. (23 rolls of microfilm)
Records include cases, 1881-1929; tax suits, 1907-1924;
marriage certificates, 1879-1931; and marriage affidavits, 1889-1931. Civil
cases, 1907-1924, start with tax suits numbered 573 thru 1630. Case papers may
include petitions, back tax bills, summons, actions, receipts, defaults or
dismissals. Marriage certificates, 1879-1931, are indexed by male last name.
Register of civil actions, 1887-1920, is also included.
Criminal Division. 1876-1940. (11 rolls of microfilm)
Records include criminal register of actions and fee book,
1915-1940, and cases, 1876-1913. The Criminal Division contains a register of
actions and feebook, 1915-1940,k but does not specify fees. District Court
cases, 1876-1929, are filed by year. A few from the 1880s are in Spanish. A new
numbering system started in 1909, after which cases are filed by case number.
Probate Division. 1879-1929. (10 rolls of microfilm)
Records from the Probate Division include minutes, 1880-1924;
cases, 1879-1914; estate, guardianship and oaths of office, 1882-1928; writs of habeas
corpus, 1883; record of wills, 1891-1928; official bonds and oaths,
1882-1883; insanity cases, 1891-1925; and naturalization records, including
declarations of intention and petitions, 1881-1931. Minutes, 1880-1924, are
arranged chronologically, but early entries are not indexed. From 1882 on they
are indexed. The minutes contain letters of administration relating to court
orders or guardianship of minor children. Probate cases, 1879-1914, are filed by
case number. A few early cases are in Spanish.
Estate, guardianship and oaths of office are indexed and
include register of proceedings, orders, letters of guardianship, bonds, decree
of settlement of account, adoptions and orders of adoptions. Writs of habeas
corpus, 1883, are orders to have persons appear before Judge of Probate
court. Record of wills, 1891-1928, is indexed and contains wills admitted to
probate, last wills and testaments, and codicils to wills. Official bonds and
oaths, 1882-1883, are the oaths and bonds for executors of wills and guardians
for minors. Probate insanity cases, 1891-1925, are filed alphabetically and
indexed, 1883-1913. They are records of insanity hearings brought before the
court for examination and commitment.
Naturalization petitions and records, 1896-1929, are the
applications to become a United States Citizen. Intentions are indexed. There
are also earlier records, 1896-1908, of different titles such as naturalization
declarations and certificates, certified copies of declaration of intention,
petition and affidavits for naturalization.

Jury lists are frequently annotated great registers but may
be typed (or handwritten) lists of names only.
