13 November 2004 - Prince George's County Courthouse Fire

The fire in the Old Courthouse for Prince George's County in Upper Marlboro, Maryland was a tragic loss for the historic building. The news from there indicates that ALL records and historic artifacts were removed from the Old Courthouse (that was destroyed) prior to the renovation and placed in the New Courthouse. During the fire, they concentrated their efforts on saving the New Building. Circuit Court Judge William Missouri was the source for this information.

The Genealogical Society of Utah microfilmed in Prince George's County in 1947 and consequently the cutoff dates were much earlier then they are now. The land records were only microfilmed to 1851, whereas today, the policy would allow the microfilming to go to 1900. The records that would complete the Genealogical Society of Utah's collection to 1900 are now at The Maryland State Archives and most have been microfilmed by the State of Maryland.
