24 February 2003 - Virginia Senate Bill 818 Defeated

Subject: Virginia Senate Bill 818
Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 14:31:38 -0500

Virginia Senate Bill 818 was defeated in the House of Delegates by a vote of 81 nays and 15 yeses; it had previously passed the Senate by a vote of 40-0. An email campaign by interested parties appears to have influenced the House of Delegates vote.

Senate Bill 818 summary: Destruction of will files. Allows the clerk to destroy a will's file along with the original will after 5 years have passed since probate or recordation and allows destruction of originals of instruments which have been recorded and remained un-retrieved by the recording party after 6 months, if the documents are no longer of any value and have been microfilmed.
